very quietly i take my leave
as quietly as i came here;
quietly i wave good-bye
to the rosy clouds in the western sky.
the golden willows by the riverside
are young brides in the setting sun;
their reflections on the shimmering waves
always linger in the depth of my heart.
the floating heart growing the sludge
sways leisurely under the water;
in the gentle waves of cambridge

and i even dream about what the life will be when we are on planets other than our earth.
that is why i’m so interested in the following scientific report recently.
cherish what we are enjoying
it is a report about the new planet which holds possibility for life.
it shows that european astronomers have discovered a new planet, they name it gliese 581 c.
it is about 20.5 light years from our earth. they estimated the planet"s average temperature at between 0 and 40 degrees centigrade. it is orbiting the red dwarf star, gliese 581.
most important of all, it’s an earth-like planet. there might be mountin, sea and liquid water.
so the astronomers believe that it is potentially habitable.
however, gliese 581 c might be "tidally locked" to it’s sun-the dwarf star the way our moon is to the earth.
it means that it must always show its same face to its sun, and that while one side would be too fiercely hot to support life, the other side would be too cold.
this report makes me to realize that how valuable our earth is.
everyday, we can see sunrise and sunset.
the day and night keeps on e_changing. it’s not too hot in the daytime while not to cold at night.

a small truth to make life 100%
karamay e_perimental middle school luo jintao
good afternoon, my dear friends and the honorable judges.
i’m very glad to be here and give you my speech. i hope we all can enjoy the time. now, today my topic is: "a small truth to make life 100%".
as a young english teacher, i have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. life goes on, but sometimes it’s becoming frustrating and i feel very tired. how to make my life become better? i’m always seeking for the answer. fortunately, when i read a magazine one day, i found the truth to make my life 100%. today i would like to share it with you.
now, my dear friends, let’s do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! as we all know, there are 26 alphabets in english, a to z. against them we have the numbers 1% to 26%. if a is equal to 1%, and b to 2%, and so on, until z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? that is to say, what can make our life perfect?
some of you may suggest "money". however, after calculating, you’ll find it only comes to 72%. now try a few more. knowledge? yes, knowledge is power! but this time it only comes to 96%. how about love? that only shows at 54%. luck does even worse, only at 47%. though most of us think this is the most important.
then what makes 100%? hard work? closer, 98%. but not e_act. now, what on earth can make life 100%? well, every problem has a solution, only if we perhaps change our attitude. yes! only attitude comes out at 100%.
many of the gifts we have been given have been distributed unfairly. we all wish we had the ability of the talented, the money of the rich, and the luck of the beautiful. but none of these matter. there is only one thing we all have equally and can always control even in the worst situations. and that is our attitude.
life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. therefore, attitude is the thing that shapes who you are the most.
attitude is everything. now, my dear friends, please give the world a sunshine smile. change your attitude and enjoy every minute in your life.
that’s all. thank you!

several days before, when i was walking around in the courtyard,i looked up at the sky and suddenly found the shouting star appear once and then vanish from my sight.at that time,i couldn"t forbear to make a shivering fit.i couldn"t forbear to shout one word out:hope!and then,i fell into thought.
when i got back to the true life,i felt that in the center of my heart there was a clear conclusion never surpassed before---it was love, and then i continued to walk around with the echoes of my voice and the darkness.
you might say that it was philosophy, but i prefered to call it love itself rather than philosophy.
you ask, why?i say because it"s true that we have been leading a difficult life, for we need not only to be under various e_ternal pressures, but also to be in the face of internal perple_ities.you would be effected by the warmth of life if soneone gives you an understanding look during your bitter struggle.even a mere glance can mske you moved and inspired.love comes directly from life and it effects life as well.
you ask, what is love?i"d like to answer you by using a paragraph of the bible.love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. it does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. i t bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things. love never ends.
you ask, what is the reason for us to seek love?i want to answer you by using a paragraph from rossell:i have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that i would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. i have sought it, ne_t, because it relieves loneliness-that terrible lonelinein which one shivering consciousnelooks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeleabyss. i have sought it, finally, because in the union of love i have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.
you ask, what is you dream?i can answer in one word---it is love.
i have a dream, that one day, every part of this world will be full of love and people always help each other.
i have a dream, that one day,the main melody of the world will be to foster and enhance love forever and ever.
i have a dream,that one day,in each part of society,love is e_ecuted and isn"t concealed by habit,blurred by time,and eroded by laziness.
i have a dream, that one day, even the most common people and the greatest people will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
i have a dream,today!
who will separate us from love? will hardship, or distre, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? no, in all these things we are more than conquerors through love.
i have a dream, that one day,i will be able to live as the only herald to the gaudy spring of love.
i wouldn"t care succeor failure, for i will only struggle ahead as long as i have been destined to the distance. i wouldn"t care the difficulties around, for what i can leave on the earth is only their view of my back since i have been marching toward the horizontal.
i have a dream that one day, when the saints and poets look at this world, they all will hear the footsteps of love!

globalization is one of the most popular words in this era。 people live in a global village, enterprises come up with global strategies statesmen promote global cooperation, even anti—terrorism has become a global task。
today i want to share my opinion of which is that globalization with you ,
when i was a little girl i looked forward to globalization because it’s said that globalization can make the world smaller and make it possible for me to talk, travel,e_change ideas and e_periences。 i can eat any delicious food from any corner of the world, i can watch movie and tv programs from any producer, i can also e_tend our horizon and our mind quickly and conveniently。 globalization sounds like a super hero that can bring everything to me。
when i growing up ,i have noticed that globalization is both a a challenge and an opportunity。 in one hand , we want to attract more and more people become interested and e_cited about china ,in the other hand, there is much change happens in our living environment and we still want to keep our beautiful scenery while enjoying cooperation with foreign companies and foreign countries。
what should we do when we face to the phenomenon ?
first of all i think we should have our national characteristics。 we should show that even globalization has its own home and globalization identity。 second, we should make good use of globalization resources from any countries as possible as we can。 from that we can benefit from it in the long run。 the last one, as i just mentioned, people living in a global village, so we are the part of the globalization and sharing the responsibility to make our world more wonderful。
in conclusion, i think globalization made our daily life more and more e_cellent, we should catch the opportunity to develop our hometown, our society, our country in every side。

crossing the sea
by liang limin(梁励敏 北京外国语大学)
good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is "crossing the sea" . an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in this poem "we and they" :
all the people like us are we
and everyone else is they
we live over the sea
while they live over the way
we eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives
they who gobble their rice off a leaf
are horrified out of their lives.
when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? today′s society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.
indeed, just take china as e_ample; our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that it′s no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonald′s and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.
however, these are only some e_pressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation′s mentality. just look around.
how many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?
how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in today′s speech contest. who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? and i′m quite certain that if confucius had lived to see today′s china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved e_pression of their passion.
it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.
take the united states as an e_ample: during the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition from japan, many american companies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.
take the chinese acupuncture as another e_ample: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!
ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. my dear fellow students, our command of the english language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.
therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural e_changes and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.
it is my happiest dream that new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.
to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:
all the people like us are we
and everyone else is they
but once you cross over the sea
you will end by looking on we
as only a sort of they.
thank you.
女士们,先生们,我们恰逢一个伟大的时代:全球经济一体化、信息革命使得世界各种文化联系比以往更加紧密;

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.
there was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a census about mountain gorillas. these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poachingand being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we’ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddledtheir babies。
yes, that’s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.
today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the

once upon a time there were a fisherman and his wife who lived together in a filthy shack near the sea. every day the fisherman went out fishing, and he fished, and he fished. once he was sitting there fishing and looking into the clear water, and he sat, and he sat. then his hook went to the bottom, deep down, and when he pulled it out, he had caught a large flounder.
then the flounder said to him, "listen, fisherman, i beg you to let me live. i am not an ordinary flounder, but an enchanted prince. how will it help you to kill me? i would not taste good to you. put me back into the water, and let me swim."
"well," said the man, "there"s no need to say more. i can certainly let a fish swim away who knows how to talk."with that he put it back into the clear water, and the flounder disappeared to the bottom, leaving a long trail of blood behind him. then the fisherman got up and went home to his wife in the filthy shack.
"husband," said the woman, "didn"t you catch anything today?" "no," said the man. "i caught a flounder, but he told me that he was an enchanted prince, so i let him swim away.""didn"t you ask for anything first?" said the woman. "no," said the man. "what should i have asked for?"
"oh," said the woman. "it is terrible living in this shack. it stinks and is filthy. you should have asked for a little cottage for us. go back and call him. tell him that we want to have a little cottage. he will surely give it to us.""oh," said the man. "why should i go back there?" "look," said the woman, "you did catch him, and then you let him swim away. he will surely do this for us. go right now."
the man did not want to go, but neither did he want to oppose his wife, so he went back to the sea.when he arrived there it was no longer clear, but yellow and green. he stood there and said: "mandje! mandje! timpe te! flounder, flounder, in the sea! my wife, my wife ilsebill, wants not, wants not, what i will?"the flounder swam up and said, "what does she want then?"
"oh," said the man, "i did catch you, and now my wife says that i really should have asked for something. she doesn"t want to live in a filthy shack any longer. she would like to have a cottage.""go home," said the flounder. "she already has it."
the man went home, and his wife was standing in the door of a cottage, and she said to him, "come in. see, now isn"t this much better?"there was a little front yard, and a beautiful little parlor, and a bedroom where their bed was standing, and a kitchen, and a dining room. everything was beautifully furnished and supplied with tin and brautensils, just as it should be. and outside there was a little yard with chickens and ducks and a garden with vegetables and fruit.
"look," said the woman. "isn"t this nice?""yes," said the man. "this is quite enough. we can live here very well.""we will think about that," said the woman.then they ate something and went to bed.
everything went well for a week or two, and then the woman said, "listen, husband. this cottage is too small. the yard and the garden are too little. the flounder could have given us a larger house. i would like to live in a large stone palace. go back to the flounder and tell him to give us a palace.""oh, wife," said the man, "the cottage is good enough. why would we want to live in a palace?"

there is only one failure called never try
what is success? different people have different ideas.you may say success is the realization of one"s hopesand justified goals.under such notion, however, people have different understanding of success because the hopes and goals they cherish vary from one another.
there may ba so mangy kinds of success in the world that i can"t enumerate them all.so maybe it"s difficult to set a defination for success.but ,in my opinion,it"s easy to define what is failure---there is only one failure called never try.
everyone has his dreams but not all of them dare to make it come true.just like a huter aimed at his game but never fire or a soldier who crying out but never toward.they are afraid of failure that they might encounter.
that reminds me of a game we used to play.we put the chairs in a circle.and the player must pass through th barriers made by the chairs with his eyes covered up.he would be allowed to memorize the positions of the chairs.but as soon as his eyes is covered,we will remove all the chairs.
sometimes, our life is just like such kind of game.we tried our best not to bump against the barriers.but these things turn out to be e_isting only in our minds.and sometimes,we made them for ourselves.we dare not to participate a competition or get cold feet to call the boy or girl we love.it turns out that the barriers we made for ourselves lead to the loss of a lot of things.
don"t give up trying untill you really bump against the chairs.even so,at least you have a place to sit on.
some people would say i tried but i failed to pass an e_am or to find a job.i"am a failure .but on the contrary,i prefer to call these things setbacks instead of failures.there is no failure in a winner "s dictionary.
it doesn"t matter i you have a tumble , what really matters is that you lose the courage to stand up and give it another try.the process is full of tears and pains.
just look back on how we learn to walk when we are young.if we gave up easily, today we may only crawl .if tomas edison gave up easily in finding a proper material to make a bulb, maybe we will live in the darkness after the sunset.perhaps we need some torches to go on with our competition.
i,myself,a shy person by nature who easily suffers from stage fright, had to get up my courage to take part in this speech contest like this.i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not coming here.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am.i will try my best because i know i would broaden my horizon and make a lot of friends here.
i still remember the first time i sang a song at a party ,the first time talking to a foreign friends, the first time made a speech on the platform, etc.although at first they almost scared me to death, but when it was over,i feel it"s worthing trying.there is a saying goes,"people often regret what they didn"t do instead of what they have done."
forrest gump often says,"life is like a bo_ of chacolate ,you never know what you are gonna get." i would say if the chacolate you got is not your favourite.don"t get upset but try the ne_t.

good afternoon, honorable judges, dear teachers & friends.
i"m lai senhan from the university of international business & economics. do you know what date is it today? today is the olympic date. i"m so glad to stand here today to share my idea about beijing olympic games together with you all. the title of my speech is: what can we do for beijing olympic games?
first of all, let me tell you a story that happened 2 years ago. at the end of august, 2004, when i decided to come to beijing for study, my friends hel_ _ _____rewell party for me. they said: after your graduation, you should look for a job in beijing, and then in 2008, we shall go to visit you during the olympic games. i laughed and answered: ok, no problem!
time flied and 2 years passed. now i am a graduate. my teachers and classmates always ask me: what"s your plan after your graduation? go back home, stay in beijing, or go to some other places? and i always answer: i will stay in beijing. i make this decision not because of my promise to my friends 2 years ago, but because: i"ve fallen in love with beijing! i"m eager to welcome the coming olympic games together with my fellow countrymen, and i wish i could do something for the olympics & for the city.
as we know, beijing will host the 29th summer olympic games in 2008. as a chinese, i think many people are thinking: what we can do for beijing olympic games. most of us are not athletes, we cannot take part in competitions directly; we are not officials either, we don"t need to do the preparatory work. we are only ordinary people, what we can do!
there are still so many things we can do! for e_ample, for me, i am a graduate majoring business english. as far as i am concerned, i will keep on learning english hard, and apply for being a volunteer. i will use english to serve the games together with other volunteers. and also, as a businessman at that time, i will avail myself of the great commercial opportunities that the olympics brings to us, make more efforts to offer my contribution to the growth of our national economy.
and for all of us, with the goal to host a "green olympics", we shall plant more trees, grass & flowers. don"t waste water. in order to alleviate the problems of air pollution & traffic congestions, we shall take buses & subways more. with the goal to host a "people"s olympics", and in order to make our olympics more attractive and to make our beijing more beautiful, we shall help everyone we meet who needs help, we shall abide by traffic rules, don"t smoke in public and no spitting. the most important way for our chinese to support our beijing olympic games, in my opinion, is to work hard on our duties.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.
there was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we"ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.
yes, that"s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.
today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. it has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth. it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. but on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren"t natural anymore. deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal. oil spills from tourist boats are polluting antarctica. tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.
all these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources.
encouragingly, the e_plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made __ the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world"s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.
now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(残疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care. because they still want their mother nature back. because they know it still belongs to them.
this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it"s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.
the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been e_cept the deer.
and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it"s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. once again, i have come to think of mrs. dian fossey be- cause it"s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.
and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there"s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.
thank you very much.
thanks,contestant#18.the topic for your impromptu speech is:which is more important for you: knowledge from books or personal e_perience? answer: thank you. i remember, on my very first day of my beloved university, one of my professors said to me,"from now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can be.the key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books."and i do learn a lot from books: i know the geometry of euclid, logic of
aristotle, fable of aesop known to children around the world. well, no offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, i do realize that personal e_perience through practice means more to me. as we are in this global information age where both economic growth and individual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around. as we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and i think this is why we are here today. we want to earn our personal e_perience through practicing our oral english, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here. and i think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history. never before have our nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal crises.and never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. and i think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams. even if we know some rules, some regulations, or e_periences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal, complicated world. instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today individually andcollectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live. thank you very much. contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism. could you e_plain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?
answer: thank you for your question. and i think the key issue is the differences between our awareness. fot e_ample, if you want to go to a place to have a trip, enjoy your trip. and i think before you get on board, get on the bus, you can have the awareness that "i’m not a polluter, but an environment keeper." we’re not go to all those scenic spots to estroy all those beautiful scenes but we to appreciate the mother nature giving us so much things. thank you very much.
contestant #18,now that information technology is becoming more and more accessible to people in china, do you think books will become less and less important?
answer: well, i think, maybe, umm, i don’t think that all those echnologies can replace the importance of books. we’re in our modern village where so many new industries—it industries, tourism ndustries—crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little bit dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of people.the world can no longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but i think the true value, the essence of our village remains the same.it is the network of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books because books is the very first beginning stage of what we learn. thank you very much.
i’d like to ask you a question about your prepared speech, please. you mention that the un has declated the year __, i think it was, "the year of ecotourism." do you think that such gestures really serve a purpose? answer: and i think one of my teachers said to me, when i prepared my prepared speech, and he tells me that if we pay more attention to omething like environmental protection or ecotourism, it is more, it is better for us to bear in mind we should learn something in our hearts, we should have something about the awareness about how to pay more respect to our environment, not to talk about something orally but to bear something in our hearts. follow our hearts, our environment can be better.thank you very much.

(4)help sb. (to)do,不用 doing。
ladies and gentlemen,
i have had a lot of teachers in my school who have given me much help in my study. for their help i will never forget them. but today i am going to talk about a special teacher of mine. this teacher is not a human being and its name is"computer". it has been teaching me a lot of knowledge and i appreciate it very much.
with the development of modern science and technology, computers are widely used in every teritories [every field](1) including education. how can a computer be my teacher? how does a computer teach me? multimedia(多媒体)helps a lot in this aspect in recent years, and computer-based training (cbt) has become a popular educational medium (手段). even before the multimedia come [came](2) up, many different learning systems appeared, using the components and techniques we now associate with the term "multimedia". multimedia components, such as graphics (动画) , animations , sound and video, make the learning process easier through visualization. animations can present many comple_ subjects dynamically, but human teachers can not do this on blackboards. multimedia makes our study more lively and interesting. for e_ample, a cd-rom disk named "encarta encyclopedia" contains 650 mb information including images, graphics, music clips, video clips, animations , te_ts, hotwords, and database search functions. fields involved includes physical sciences, performance arts, social sciences, politics, military, education and so on. when pressing a button, i can hear american president clinton"s speech clip. i may enjoy playing all kinds of musical instruments in the world. i can also see the animation of many physical phenomena. this makes physical concept to be understood deeply [ concepts understood better](3). the audio features of multimedia can greatly help me learning [learn] (4) foreign languages. with its speech output capabilities, i"m no longer dependent on an instructor for proper pronunciation.
how can i interact with a computer? there are many ways, including keyboard, mouse pointer, and touch screen. i often use a keyboard. when i press right keys, i can see and hear whatever i want. information world is at my fingertip. i wish that true speech input-output system would be invented one day.
as teachers, computers have a lot of virtues: they are positive, they have good memories and never lose any information stored in them. they have much knowledge in every field. they can let out all kinds of sounds, and can also improve the efficiency of our study. for e_ample, if i want to, i can skip some chapters so that i can study at my own pace.
although computers will never take the place of human teachers, they are welcomed by more and more learners. computers will continue to evolve(发展)with the aid of modern technologies. computers are so powerful, helpful and important that everybody needs it, especially in the future! i love my computer teacher!
thank you.

the doors that are open to us
good morning ladies and gentlemen:
the title of my speech today is "the doors that are open to us ".
the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. "i got the highest mark in the mid-term e_amination!" she said. don"t be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be e_act, a college student at the age of 45.
last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "this was the wisest decision i have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

what is real beauty?
yang lingyuan
it is human nature that all of us should be fond of beauty. everybody was born with a heart for beauty.
today in china, with the rising of our living standard, people"s requirement of beauty has been heightened accordingly. some people spare no money or energy on beautiful clothes, fashionable hair styles, the decoration of their houses and even the improvement of their looks. but it seems to me,all
these are more or less confined to the beauty in appearance,or rather, the outward beauty.
in my opinion,we shouldn"t only pay attention to beautiful appearance and neglect the beautification of the mind and what we are after should be the perfect unity of the outward beauty and the inner beauty. as we all know,so far as objects and animals are concerned, there is only beautiful appearance to be mentioned, but to us humanbeings, although the outward beauty really matters, the inner beauty is much more important. this was confirmed by a famous russian writer in words much like this: "a person is
not lovely for being beautiful but beautiful for being lovely. "
here, i"d like to quote two typical instances and i"m sure, my dear friends, from them you"ll find out what real beauty is.
recently i learned from the radio an unpleasant incident about a well known singer. she is very charming with a sweet beautiful voice and very famous for singing the song."devotion of love". not long ago,she was invited to zhejiang province to give performance. the moment she was to appear on the stage, she suddenly asked for more reward. worse still, after her request was satisfied, she didn"t begin to sing at once. instead, she took her time to count all the money piece by piece. thus she kept the audience waiting for half an hour. so when she at last showed up and started to sing "devotion of love",a man rose up from his seat and shouted at her,"you don"t have any devotion of love. you are not qualified to sing this song ! "hearing this, the singer stopped singing and began to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. at this time the whole audience burst into an uproar.
how disappointed her keen listeners were when they learned this! it is the singer herself who spoiled her beautiful image in the eyes of others.
now, i"m coming to another true story. it"s about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. she was a widow without any children, living barely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbish heaps. however, she took in more than ten homeless orphans successively and managed to bring them up. every day she labored from morning till night. in order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school, she even went to a hospital regularly to sell her blood. she got so weak for the loss of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.
when asked why she chose to burden herself with so many children, she smiled and simply answered,"oh,i love children and i like to have their company. "
though the old woman was poor materially, she was full of affection and rich in spirit. she was loved dearly by her children. she was also highly appreciated by the local government, and truly respected by people in her community.
maybe you can"t help wondering, "what makes that ordinary woman so e_traordinary?" it is nothing else but her inner beauty, her true devotion of love without any thought of rewarding. what a sharp contrast there is between the great woman and the selfish singer]
so,to answer the question "what is real beauty?", i declare definitely,it is the beauty lying in one"s heart of hearts and embodied in his actions and deeds, that is,the inner heauty!
learn how to say no
we"ve all been taught that we should help people. it is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. it may even win us favors in return. however, we must be realistic. we can"t say yes to every request. if we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. sometimes we simply don"t have the time to help. in this case, we must know how to say no politely.
when we need to say no, here is one method we can try. first, we should tell the truth. if we really can"t do something, we should just say so. second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. we must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. a true friend will understand. finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. it can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. in short, we cannot please everyone all the time. refusing favors is a part of life.
i regain confidence

i received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. i applied to be a host in our student acting troupe and felt confident that i would be accepted. but one of the panel members told me: "you seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." my life has never been the same since. i used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. but no matter how hard i tried to look the part, there was still something missing.
as president of english club, i organized the rehearsal of snow white for an english party. unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. it had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in english. suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and i knew i would have to be the dwarf. to my great surprise and delight, once on stage, i was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. as the dwarf, i was a big hit.
yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and te_tures.
a world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. the real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.
given a choice, i would rather be ugly than live in such a world. i"d rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a snow white than be a snow white among nothing but snow whites. i would rather be myself. i would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. please, be yourself.

in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days are the best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into my university. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.
after the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in my studies. the classes given by the teachers are e_cellent. they provide us with information not only from our te_tbooks but from many other sources as well. they easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.
frankly speaking, at first i had some difficulty following the teachers. however, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers" guidance, i made remarkable progress. now i"ve benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.
learning is a long process; i"ll keep e_ploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. this summer i got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world. a publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.
at the beginning i was belittled by my colleagues. but they were really surprised when i translated seven english articles over 5,000 words on only one day. gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. in their opinion i turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.
i also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. so i often take part in activities concerning public welfare. i once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. we taught the kids there who could not afford school. while showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. i couldn"t control my tears on the day when we left. the precious e_perience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.
besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. i do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. we also write a play and put it on in our spare time.
campus life is the most splendid time. but different people have different choices. the majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they"ll become outstanding. but there are indeed some students still under ignorance. they gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. they"re busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. they forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.
finally, i do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. i do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!
