it was usual shiny day when we were about to leave our lyceum and get to the long road that was passing through the high and mighty mountains of “kyrgyz jeri”. and when we were on the way to tam chi, a fertile garden village of wooden chocolate-bo_ cottages and shady, poplar-lined avenues, my teacher said with his funny voice, ?listen everybody! now we are on the way to issyk-kul, and i want you not to sleep on first mission of our summer vacation because you could not realize the beauty of nature and compose an essay on your final e_am. and some of us really didn’t sleep after his funny advice, trying to get a real pleasure from staring at the grand mountains. but during the way the others of us were just listening the music, joking to each other and flying in their dreams. finally, we reached the place where everyone changed their face and had a big smile, which showed that all of us were really pleased of seeing our magic lake. after some times later, we got into our nest! and then had first unforgettable dinner near the lake and under the thousands of blazing stars, which reminded us that we were in paradise. and it was indeed amazing? on the ne_t day, after having a wonderful breakfast, we went to the beach for swimming and having a sunbath. when i saw the warm and silk like soft water that was attracting all of us, i rushed to it and noticed that not only i was running like a wild animal, but all my friends did the same as well. the water is e_cellent, said one of us. yeah, it is, replied another one. but after a little time, there were again coming lots of voices like, wow, cool, and many other sounds that showed our both surprise and gladness. we were happy and at the same time tired. so we went back to have lunch and then to get asleep. everyone was sleeping when one of my friends and i were playing cards and discussing about our aims in life and about friendship. i thought that having the best friends makes me feel self-assured in my decisions and be full for a real life by recognizing its wellnein community and nature. i thought that only with them i could get a hand and find the way in ! my own life path by discovering my abilities and finding out my great wishes in life. but after some minutes my friend and i were sleeping and continuing discussing, and this time in our dreams. in evening, we were usually watching comedy films and films about the battles. but on another day we decided to have a party, so we went to a local disco named as discovery. and the life would be more interesting that night if i didn’t quarrel with my best friend. we started arguing only for our own interests; he insisted on drinking some alcohol and dance, i insisted on not doing that because it would bring big problems and moreover it would be shame on ourselves. unfortunately, all my friends were against me, because they thought that we could afford drinking alcohol considering that we were about to finish our school. that night i lost all my best friends just in a moment. all my thoughts about friendship were ruined; my heart burst into small pieces that will never be joined any more. and from that moment i started to build everything in my life from zero. i became more serious with my attitude toward people and became more careful myself as well.

outside the court, the student was asked, “how do you make it to the end?” he said, “as a law student, i root my faith in law. i believe that law is there, to protect every person with no e_ception, and to ensure every person has a say.”

his words spread a strong faith in law, which is not only a doctrine of a law student, but also a belief that all citizens ought to hold. it is this faith that initiates the student to resort to law for a tiny issue; it is this faith that supports him to endure all the e_hausting trips when collecting evidence; it is this faith that makes a seemingly “ridiculous” receipt request legal and rightful. it is this faith that helps to change our life, enhance our judicial system and bring social justice.

to many, a receipt of 1 yuan is too small to mention, however rights are to be respected and law is to be believed in. it all starts with a tiny receipt of 1 yuan, but we get a monumental case, a new regulation and a bumper harvest in social justice. the bridge that leads a tiny start to a bumper harvest is faith, the faith in law, rightful and strong.

今天，我们这一代青年人有幸生活在改革开放的大好时代，有幸站立在世纪和千年交汇点上。我们是幸运者。面对新世纪，我们责任重大。我们回顾发扬"五四"精 神，认真思索着，自己应该拥有一个怎样的青春，怎样的人生。记得，最初开始认识"五四"是从小学的历史课开始的。那时，老师讲到"五四"运动，向我们讲述 帝国主义列强对中国的种种欺凌，讲述青年们为祖国不惜献身的种种壮举。当时，我们虽然还不能完全理解其中的深刻道理，但有如一丝曙光照亮蒙昧的荒原，我们 幼小的心田中已播下了爱国的种子。渐渐地，我们长大了，我们成为风华正茂的青年，我们更加深刻地懂得了五四的传统和精神。想想那些曾经与我们差不多大的五 四青年吧！他们稚嫩的肩上早已承当起一份救亡图存的重任，而今天建设祖国的重任将别无选择地落在我们这一代人的肩上，我们是否应该为祖国的更加繁荣昌盛而 奉献我们的一切？

是啊，我们不小了，我们不能永远停在父母宽大的羽翼下避风躲雨。今年的五月四日，我们将参加成人宣誓仪式。那意味着我们将要同父辈们一起，共同撑起一片蓝天。

长辈们常说我们这一代人是蜜罐里泡大的孩子，少些紧迫感，也少些责任感。的确，与他们相比，我们的生活更舒适，更安逸。但这决不意味着我们可以放松身上的努力，减轻肩上的责任。

人们每每谈到我们苏北老区总是感慨万分。苏北大地，是一片美丽而神奇的土地，我们盐阜地区也曾在中国革命留下过光辉的一页。戎马倥偬的年代，这一方热 土，曾经为中国的革命付出了多么昂贵的代价。新中国成立后，这里的人们用自己的双手，凭着苏北人的勤劳和智慧，使自己的家乡发生了翻天覆地的变化。说起这 一切，我们心中总是充满自豪。但是，我们也应该看到，这里与祖国的其他发达地区相比还有着很大的差距，这里个别地方的贫困还有待于进一步治理。这里的整体 经济还有待进一步的腾飞。我们，作为苏北青年，首先应该感觉到的是什么？责任，感到的应该是责任。"生我是这片土地，养我是这片土地。"我们爱着脚下的这 片热土。我们就要承担起建设家乡，繁荣家乡的责任。

在我的家乡，有一位与我的父亲同龄人。他就是全国闻名的身残志坚的农村科技铁人姜德明。他立足农田，孜孜不倦地研究着小麦、棉花如何在家乡的土地上能够有 更高的总产量。当他的研究取得了初步成果时，癌症又一次地向他袭来。他没有倒下，拄着拐杖依然风里雨里地留在田头，走访在农户家中。不懈的努力，他培育出 的优良品种得到了推广，种植技术得到了普及，粮食总产量大幅度提高，农民的双手欢迎这样的农技员。把他誉为"农技铁人"。他是我们老区青年的好榜样。去 年，他在我市青年成人宣誓仪式上谆谆告诫我们，为老区经济的腾飞，要努力学习，掌握科学文化知识，立足本职，捧着一颗心来，不带半根草去！我们记住了这位 铁人的话，我们意识到了自己的责任，我们盐阜老区的青年们都会努力的。 是的，责任放在我们每个青年的肩上，放眼新世纪，振兴中华，建设家乡，我们是不会退缩的。

李大钊曾在《青春》一文中写道："冲决历史桎梏，涤荡历史之积_，新造民族之生命，挽回民族之危机。"今天的我们虽然无需面对国土的沦丧，无需承受战火硝 烟，但我们面前的任务同样艰巨。我们应该努力成为鲁迅所说的"创造人类历从未有过的第三代。""位卑未敢忘忧国"，以天下为己任，青春热血献祖国，顽 强地努力，无私地奉献，为祖国的繁荣昌盛贡献自己的全部智慧和力量。我们今天是桃李芬芳，明天是社会的栋梁，要掀起中华腾飞的巨浪。

crossing the sea

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is "crossing the sea".

an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in his poem "we and they":

"all the people like us are we

and everyone else is they

we live over the sea

while they live over the way

we eat pork and beef with cowhorn-handled knives

they who gobble their rice off a leaf

are horrified out of their lives."

when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked-how could two peoples remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? today"s society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat with cowhorn-handled knives might be very skillful in using chopsticks, and those people who used to gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.

indeed, just take china as an e_ample: our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that it"s no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonald"s and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.

however, these are only some e_pressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation"s mentality. just look around.

how many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?

how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in today"s speech contest. who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? and i"m quite certain that if confucius had lived to see today"s china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved e_pression of their passion.

it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong inf1uence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.

take the united states as an e_ample: during the 1980s,in face of the overwhelming competition from japan, many american companies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.

take the chinese acupuncture as another e_ample: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body -- an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!

ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race. to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller.

my dear fellow students, our command of the english language renders it possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural e_changes and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.

it is my happiest dream that the new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca-cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.

to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:

"all the people like us are we

and everyone else is they

but once you cross over the sea

you will end by looking on we

as only a sort of they"

女士们、先生们，晚上好。今天，我演讲的题目是:《穿越海洋》。

英国诗人罗得雅德?吉卜林曾写过一首诗，名叫《我们与他们》，其中写道:

像我们的人是我们

其余的人是他们

我们生活在海这边

他们生活在路那边

我们用牛角柄的刀叉吃猪牛肉

吞吃粽叶包饭的他们吓得要死。

第一次读到这首诗，我很震惊——过去两个民族何以如此疏离、彼此陌生?当然今日的社会呈现出完全不同的情景:那些过去吃米饭的人们也开始喜欢吃鱼和薯条。

的确如此，就拿中国来说，西方的生活方式已经广泛地影响了我们的现代生活，以致对于年轻人对摇滚乐着迷，全家去吃麦当劳，老年人穿苹果牌牛仔裤，大家都已习以为常。

然而，这不过是我们当今社会中所发生的文化变迁的表面现象而已，真正发生的却是我们的民族心理开始了微妙而又有重大意义的重建，大家只要看看周围就会清楚。

不久以前，大学生还只是束手空坐，等待政府给他们分配工作;如今，又有多少大学生正在做充分准备，为争取任何工作机会而激烈角逐?

20__年前年轻人还完全依靠父母为他们安排未来，今天又有多少年轻人在急切地寻求一种独立的生活?试问今天参加演讲比赛的诸位，谁不是带着志在一搏的心情来到这里?谁不是铁下心来赢得这场比赛以实现自我?如今年轻人毫无顾忌地宣泄情感当众亲吻，我确信，倘若孔子在世，他必被吓坏。

很明显，我们这些东方古老文明的后裔们早已生活在西方文化的强烈影响之下，然而出现这种异质文化合流的现象不止是在中国。

以美国为例，20世纪80年代，面对来自日本的强大竞争压力，许多美国公司如福特公司开始采用对手的集体合作管理方式，而这种方式正是东方文化核心之精华。

再以中华针灸为例，这种传统的医疗方法以及这种疗法的依据——即人体阴阳失调导致疾病最终得到西方社会的承认，而在过去，西方人还认为这是无稽之谈。

女士们，先生们，我们恰逢一个伟大的时代:全球经济一体化、信息革命使得世界各种文化联系比以往更加紧密;

我们恰逢一个特殊的年代:无论是东方国家还是西方国家都意识到自身急需调整传统价值。与此同时，我们正生活在发展的关键时刻:种族冲突，地区动荡正越来越威胁着整个人类的和平与幸福。如何对待这一时代，拥抱更加灿烂的未来，我们需要学会在越来越小的世界大家庭中更加和睦地生活。

亲爱的同学们，我们掌握英语，得以了解西方文化，与此同时，又不失本民族的文化特征。

因此，促进中国与世界的文化交流与相互理解是我们神圣的责任。

我有一个美好的梦想，我梦想中国的年轻一代不仅仅在喝可口可乐、看好莱坞影片中成长，而且还受益于我们的父辈所从未梦想过的多元文化所带来的深远影响。

many human activities and their by-products have the potential to pollute water. please have a look along the banks of the river, large and small industrial enterprises discharge dirty

water, tons of garbage were thrown into the river, the water contained so much that it can"t clean itself. compared with the dramatic development in many sides of shanghai, the suzhou river has become a black point of the appearance of city.

fortunately, the government has control the situation now, we are happy to see some parts of the river has become clean again, and we even can find fish sometime.

the unique earth is the only planet full of lives, the water is just like the blood in the active body, protecting water is saving ourselves. not to waste a single drop of water, otherwise, the only drop of water we could keep in the future would be our tear!
