who deserves help?
many years ago, there lived a very rich man who wanted to do something for the people of his town. but first he wanted to find out whether they deserved his help. so he placed a very large stone in the center of the main road into town. then he hid behind a tree and waited. soon an old man came along with his cow.
"who put this stone in the center of the road?" said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. all of them complained about the stone in the center of the road, but not one of them tried to remove it. late in the afternoon, a young man came along. he saw the stone and said, "the night will be very dark. some neighbor will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone. "
the young man then began to move the stone. he pushed and pulled with all his strength to move it to one side. but imagine his surprise when under the stone he found a bag full of money and this message: "this money is for the thoughtful person who removes this stone from the road. that person deserves help."

so earlier this year, i was informed that iwould be doing a ted talk. so i was e_cited, then i panicked, then i wase_cited, then i panicked, and in between the e_citement and the panicking, istarted to do my research, and my research primarily consisted of googling howto give a great ted talk.
and interspersed with that, i was googlingchimamanda ngozi adichie. how many of you know who that is?
so i was googling her because i alwaysgoogle her because i"m just a fan, but also because she always has importantand interesting things to say. and the combination of those searches keptleading me to her talk on the dangers of a single story, on what happens whenwe have a solitary lens through which to understand certain groups of people, and it is the perfect talk. it"s the talk that i would have given if i had beenfamous first.
you know, and you know, like, she"s africanand i"m african, and she"s a feminist and i"m a feminist, and she"s astoryteller and i"m a storyteller, so i really felt like it"s my talk.
so i decided that i was going to learn howto code, and then i was going to hack the internet and i would take down allthe copies of that talk that e_isted, and then i would memorize it, and then iwould come here and deliver it as if it was my own speech. so that plan wasgoing really well, e_cept the coding part, and then one morning a few monthsago, i woke up to the news that the wife of a certain presidential candidatehad given a speech that --that sounded eerily like a speech given byone of my other faves, michelle obama.
and so i decided that i should probablywrite my own ted talk, and so that is what i am here to do. i"m here to talkabout my own observations about storytelling. i want to talk to you about thepower of stories, of course, but i also want to talk about their limitations, particularly for those of us who are interested in social justice.
so since adichie gave that talk seven yearsago, there has been a boom in storytelling. stories are everywhere, and ifthere was a danger in the telling of one tired old tale, then i think there hasgot to be lots to celebrate about the flourishing of so many stories and somany voices. stories are the antidote to bias. in fact, today, if you aremiddle class and connected via the internet, you can download stories at thetouch of a button or the swipe of a screen.
you can listen to a podcast aboutwhat it"s like to grow up dalit in kolkata. you can hear an indigenous man inaustralia talk about the trials and triumphs of raising his children in dignityand in pride. stories make us fall in love. they heal rifts and they bridgedivides. stories can even make it easier for us to talk about the deaths ofpeople in our societies who don"t matter, because they make us care. right?
i"m not so sure, and i actually work for aplace called the centre for stories. and my job is to help to tell stories thatchallenge mainstream narratives about what it means to be black or a muslim ora refugee or any of those other categories that we talk about all the time.
but i come to this work after a long history as a s
ocial justice activist, and soi"m really interested in the ways that people talk about nonfictionstorytelling as though it"s about more than entertainment, as though it"s aboutbeing a catalyst for social action. it"s not uncommon to hear people say thatstories make the world a better place. increasingly, though, i worry that eventhe most poignant stories, particularly the stories about people who no oneseems to care about, can often get in the way of action towards social justice.now, this is not because storytellers mean any harm.
quite the contrary. storytellersare often do-gooders like me and, i suspect, yourselves. and the audiences ofstorytellers are often deeply compassionate and empathetic people. still, goodintentions can have unintended consequences, and so i want to propose thatstories are not as magical as they seem. so three -- because it"s always got tobe three -- three reasons why i think that stories don"t necessarily make theworld a better place.
firstly, stories can create an illusion ofsolidarity. there is nothing like that feel-good factor you get from listeningto a fantastic story where you feel like you climbed that mountain, right, orthat you befriended that death row inmate. but you didn"t. you haven"t doneanything. listening is an important but insufficient step towards socialaction.
secondly, i think often we are drawntowards characters and protagonists who are likable and human. and this makessense, of course, right? because if you like someone, then you care about them.but the inverse is also true. if you don"t like someone, then you don"t careabout them. and if you don"t care about them, you don"t have to see yourself ashaving a moral obligation to think about the circumstances that shaped theirlives.
i learned this lesson when i was 14 yearsold. i learned that actually, you don"t have to like someone to recognize theirwisdom, and you certainly don"t have to like someone to take a stand by theirside. so my bike was stolen while i was riding it --which is possible if you"re riding slowlyenough, which i was.
so one minute i"m cutting across this fieldin the nairobi neighborhood where i grew up, and it"s like a very bumpy path, and so when you"re riding a bike, you don"t want to be like, you know --
and so i"m going like this, slowlypedaling, and all of a sudden, i"m on the floor. i"m on the ground, and i lookup, and there"s this kid peddling away in the getaway vehicle, which is mybike, and he"s about 11 or 12 years old, and i"m on the floor, and i"m cryingbecause i saved a lot of money for that bike, and i"m crying and i stand up andi start screaming. instinct steps in, and i start screaming, "mwizi, mwizi!" which means "thief" in swahili. and out of thewoodworks, all of these people come out and they start to give chase. this isafrica, so mob justice in action. right?
and i round the corner, and they"vecaptured him, they"ve caught him. the suspect has been apprehended, and theymake him give me my bike back, and they also make him apologize. again, youknow, typical african justice, right? and so they make him say sorry. and so westand there facing each other, and he looks at me, and he says sorry, but helooks at me with this unbridled fury. he is very, very angry. and it is thefirst time that i have been confronted with someone who doesn"t like me simplybecause of what i represent. he looks at me with this look as if to say,"you, with your shiny skin and your bike, you"re angry at me?"
so it was a hard lesson that he didn"t likeme, but you know what, he was right. i was a middle-class kid living in a poorcountry. i had a bike, and he barely had food. sometimes, it"s the messagesthat we don"t want to hear, the ones that make us want to crawl out ofourselves, that we need to hear the most.
for every lovable storyteller whosteals your heart, there are hundreds more whose voices are slurred and ragged, who don"t get to stand up on a stage dressed in fine clothes like this. thereare a million angry-boy-on-a-bike stories and we can"t afford to ignore themsimply because we don"t like their protagonists or because that"s not the kidthat we would bring home with us from the orphanage.
the third reason that i think that storiesdon"t necessarily make the world a better place is that too often we are soinvested in the personal narrative that we forget to look at the biggerpicture. and so we applaud someone when they tell us about their feelings ofshame, but we don"t necessarily link that to oppression. we nod understandinglywhen someone says they felt small, but we don"t link that to discrimination.
the most important stories, especially for social justice, are those that doboth, that are both personal and allow us to e_plore and understand thepolitical.
but it"s not just about the stories we likeversus the stories we choose to ignore. increasingly, we are living in asociety where there are larger forces at play, where stories are actually formany people beginning to replace the news. yeah? we live in a time where we arewitnessing the decline of facts, when emotions rule and analysis, it"s kind of boring, right?
where we value what we feel more than what we actually know. arecent report by the pew center on trends in america indicates that only 10percent of young adults under the age of 30 "place a lot of trust in themedia." now, this is significant. it means that storytellers are gainingtrust at precisely the same moment that many in the media are losing theconfidence in the public. this is not a good thing, because while stories areimportant and they help us to have insights in many ways, we need the media.
from my years as a social justice activist, i know very well that we needcredible facts from media institutions combined with the powerful voices ofstorytellers. that"s what pushes the needle forward in terms of social justice.
in the final analysis, of course, it isjustice that makes the world a better place, not stories. right? and so if itis justice that we are after, then i think we mustn"t focus on the media or onstorytellers. we must focus on audiences, on anyone who has ever turned on aradio or listened to a podcast, and that means all of us.
so a few concluding thoughts on whataudiences can do to make the world a better place. so firstly, the world wouldbe a better place, i think, if audiences were more curious and more skepticaland asked more questions about the social conte_t that created those storiesthat they love so much. secondly, the world would be a better place ifaudiences recognized that storytelling is intellectual work.
and i think itwould be important for audiences to demand more buttons on their favoritewebsites, buttons for e_ample that say, "if you liked this story, clickhere to support a cause your storyteller believes in." or "click hereto contribute to your storyteller"s ne_t big idea." often, we arecommitted to the platforms, but not necessarily to the storytellers themselves.and then lastly, i think that audiences can make the world a better place byswitching off their phones, by stepping away from their screens and steppingout into the real world beyond what feels safe.
alice walker has said, "look closelyat the present you are constructing. it should look like the future you aredreaming." storytellers can help us to dream, but it"s up to all of us tohave a plan for justice.thank you.(applause)

when i was nine years old i went off to summer camp for the first time. and my mother packed me a suitcase full of books, which to me seemed like a perfectly natural thing to do. because in my family, reading was the primary group activity. and this might sound antisocial to you, but for us it was really just a different way of being social. you have the animal warmth of your family sitting right ne_t to you, but you are also free to go roaming around the adventureland inside your own mind. and i had this idea that camp was going to be just like this, but better. (laughter) i had a vision of 10 girls sitting in a cabin cozily reading books in their matching nightgowns.
camp was more like a keg party without any alcohol. and on the very first day our counselor gathered us all together and she taught us a cheer that she said we would be doing every day for the rest of the summer to instill camp spirit. and it went like this: "r-o-w-d-i-e, that's the way we spell rowdie. rowdie, rowdie, let's get rowdie." yeah. so i couldn't figure out for the life of me why we were supposed to be so rowdy, or why we had to spell this word incorrectly. (laughter) but i recited a cheer. i recited a cheer along with everybody else. i did my best. and i just waited for the time that i could go off and read my books.

have you insisted on reading great books
what is a great book? there is no end to the making of books. nor does there seem to be any end to the making lists of great books. there has always be more books than one could read. you can be happy at the fact that the number of that is relatively small.
however, today, people usually leave it in the library. according to the national reading survey issued by the china academy of press and publication, in 20__, only 55% chinese aged between18 and 70 book read books .that is to say, there are more than forty percent of the people seldom read in china.
it is a great challenge to literature. as a educated student, have you insist on reading great books. in order to change the situation ,we must take actions to read great books.
in adler’s essay of what is a great book, he e_plain why we should read great books. i conclude it as follows.
first, great books are the most readable. they will not let you down ,if you read them well. the have more ideas per page than most books in the their entirety. this is why you can read a great book over and over again and never e_haust it contents.
second ,great books are always contemporary,in contrast to the books we called contemporary, because they are currently popular ,last for a year or tow,or ten at most. you may probably can not recall the names of many earlier best sellers, and you may probably would not be interest in reading them. but the great are never out modeled by the movement of thought or the shifting winds of opinion .
third ,great books are the most instructive. this follows the fact that they are original communications. they contain what cannot be found in other books. whether you ultimately agree or disagree what they say. they are the primary teachers of mankind. they have made basic contribution to human right .
just giving you the reason is not enough, i will give you some methods to realize you reading dream.
firstly, you can begin with a interesting novel. you will be attracted by the figures, the plots .than ,after reading a lot of books ,you may be get into a habit of reading. so,you can contact with some comple_ books, such as philosophy ,arts and so on. you will be shocked at the new world.
there are countless great books in our library, you must make great advantage of it. of course ,it is a better choice to buy great books. collecting books is a enjoyable thing,at least for me. so,reading great books. the new world is coming.
good morning ladies and gentlemen. today i’m very glad to be here with you to share my stories and opinions about reading. i love reading from the bottom of my heart. and i do learn a lot from books. i know the wonderful stories of great heroes in history, secrets of nature, mysteries of ufo and our universe. to me , books are like a faithful friend, always around me , giving me enjoyment and wisdom. i remember when i was in primary school, ten or eleven years old, my father borrowed some books from the library in his school. those were among the greatest works of the world, including abrabian nights、the legend of deification, journey to the west, and the romance of the three kingdoms. these books were all written in
ancient chinese characters but i tried to read the heavy books and were deeply attracted. from then on, i spared every minute to read whatever i could get. whenever i got a new book, i kept reading until i finished it despite time and place. i read books even in class or just a few minutes before the e_ams. in my mind, there is always an unforgettable scene: lying in bed, nervous but e_cited, my friend and i read a book together in the weak light of a flashlight , with a quilt on us, in order not to be blamed by parents. all my classmates thought i was crazy and gave me a nickname “bookworm”. so you can understand why i got my eyes shortsighted.
till now, i still like reading as i used to. and i’m very
pleased to see that my ten-year-old son loves reading just like me. i have bought him many books. whenever you come into my home, you can find books in every corner. but the place where my son and i enjoy reading most is in the toilet. so it often happens in the morning: one is in the toilet reading something comfortably, while another
walking outside , shouting. for my age, i like to read magazines or short stories to get rela_ation as well as inspiration.
today we live in a world of prosperity. never before have we
faced so many temptation from the outside world. never before have we had so many chances to enjoy our lives. we drive rather than walking; we go online to chat with people we’ve never met before instead of talking to friends around us. but there’s always something that cannot be replaced and forgotten., such as books. so i will allow myself to continue the journey in the ocean of books until the very end of my life.
finally, i’d like to end my speech with a great philosopher, writer and thinker, francis bacon’s famous saying: reading makes a full man. studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. thank you very much.
which is more important: knowledge from books or
knowledge from e_perience
as we know, most knowledge we have comes from two sources: the books or personal e_perience in our daily life. each one has its advantage. maybe some people think that book knowledge is more important than e_perience knowledge. however, i am strongly against their opinion. i consider that e_perience is more useful.
firstly, practical e_perience can help us find jobs successful. there are two kinds of people: e_perienced employees and college graduates, if you are a manager, which one do you prefer? there is no doubt that you will choose the e_perienced employees. because they have more practical knowledge, they understand what their companies needs and how to make profit for their companies. some college graduates have learned much book knowledge, but they can’t take advantage of these theories effectively. therefore, many companies are not willing to employ graduates. this phenomenon tells us e_perience is more important for us to find good jobs.
secondly, e_perience can give us more impressed knowledge. it’s said that one learn by doing, if you want to make advances, it’s necessary to practice. moreover, we learn how to get along with others or how to have self-respect from e_perience. we feel happy and sorrow directly from e_perience. the precious knowledge absolutely can’t get from
books.
thirdly, our country’s development depends on innovation, which comes from e_perimentation. comparing chinese education system with american’s, we know that chinese education usually pay more attention to scores students get and neglect their ability of innovation. on the contrary, american education emphasizes personal practice, that’s the reason why the progress of american technology is so rapid. the contrast reminds us of the importance of e_perience knowledge.
needless to say both learning sources have their own advantages. but in my opinion, e_perience knowledge is more important, because without practical e_perience, it’s impossible to get a real understanding of book knowledge, and to know how to apply this knowledge to real situations.

dream what you want to dream,go where you want to go,be what you want to be.because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal's defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that's why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
thank you.

a woman was waiting at an airport one night, with several long hours before her flight. she hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop. she was engrossed in her book but happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between, which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene. so she munched the cookies and watched the clock, as the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.
she was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by, thinking,"if i wasn"t so nice, i would blacken his eye." with each cookie she took, he took one too. when only one was left, she wondered what he would do. with a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. he offered her half, as he ate the other.
she snatched it from him and thought...oooh, brother. this guy has some nerve and he"s also rude. why he didn"t even show any gratitude! she had never known when she had been so galled and sighed with relief when her flight was called. she gathered her belongings and headed to the gate, refusing to look back at the ingrate thief.
she boarded the plane, and sank in her seat. then she sought her book, which was almost complete. as she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise. there was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes. if mine are here, she moaned in despair, the others were his, and he tried to share. too late to apologize, she realized with grief, that she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.
how many times in our lives have we absolutely known that something was a certain way, only to discover later that what we believed to be true...was not?
it is only when we silence the blaring sounds of our daily e_istence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us.

while proudly showing off his new apartment to friends, a college student led the way into the den. "what is the big brass gong and hammer for?" one of his friends asked. "that is the talking clock," the man replied. "how"s it work?"
"watch," the man said and proceeded to give the gong an ear shattering pound with the hammer. suddenly, someone screamed from the other side of the wall, "knock it off, you idiot! it"s two o"clock in the morning!"

"what are you in for?" asked the governor.
"i held a high office," the convict humbly replied, "and sold subordinate appointments. "
"then i decline to interfere," said the governor, with asperity; "a man who abuses his office by making it serve a private end and purvey a personal advantage is unfit to be free. by the way, mr. warden," he added to that official, as the convict slunk away, "in appointing you to this position, i was given to understand that your friends could make the shikane county delegation to the ne_t state convention solid for - for the present administration. was i rightly informed?"
